Yaquina River And More

There is a lot of talk about Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon but, not much conversation about the Yaquina River which flows westerly into the Bay.

It is approximately fifty miles long and, starts just west of Corvallis in the Siuslaw National Forest. In fact, as you head from Corvallis on Highway 20 to the coast you see it but, not necessarily at it's prime.

However, if you really want to take in a cool scenic route you have to travel the Yaquina Bay Road from Newport to Toledo or, vice versa. It follows the river to a "T" and, there are some cool stops along the way.

In a car, it's scenic but, not many places to pull over. Probably the best route is on a bike because it is easier to park along the way.

The first three photos here were taken in Toledo which is seven miles from Newport. The fourth photo was taken about halfway along Yaquina Bay Road.
There is a ship repair place right in Toledo. You see a little of this in the second and third pics. These are not small boats they are working on.

After the boats, there are a bunch of random photos taken in Toledo. One of my favorite places is the "Things Found Mercantile & Gallery"...really a different type of an antique store with extremely good prices on their merchandise. A five star place to visit.

We had lunch at "Gracie Mae's Bakery and Cafe"...a neat place to eat! Not just another boring place to eat! Cool grits! Check 'em out!

Toledo Oregon Farmers Market

The Toledo, Oregon Farmers Market is the second longest running in Oregon. And, it happens from 10am to 3pm on Thursdays during the spring and summer months...Saturdays during the winter months.

It is held on Main Street and, it isn't confined to a certain parking lot or area. It is scattered up and down Main Street.

Another thing that is unique, are that the regular stores and shops along the way are integrated into it. This makes for both a huge and interesting market. Whoever is responsible for the planning has their "ducks lined up"!

Entertainers are spread out too. Although, they may not be part of the official deal.

If you don't know, Toledo is about seven miles from the Oregon Coast and Newport. It is really a coastal town, but it is far enough inland to grow tomatoes (kind of a joke, it's hard to grow them in Newport where I live).

So what are you going to do when you go to the Central Oregon Coast? You are going to visit the Toledo Farmers Market...right? You are going to visit Toledo anyway...right?

Trivia time: Toledo is named after Toledo, Ohio...but, what is Toledo, Ohio named after and how come?

OK! Here we go with the random photos!

Toledo Oregon

If you ever visit the Oregon Coast, one of the cool places to visit is Toledo, Oregon...a tad east, and inland of Newport on the Central Coast.

It is an easy place to miss if you take Highway 20 from Corvallis to the Coast. You don't really see it from the highway as you approach Newport. And, then there's that quest to get to the beach instead of stopping in Toledo.

That's too bad! It's basically a mill town but it also has a neat artist community, a cool downtown, waterfront and railroad museum.

It was founded in 1866 by by John Graham and originally named  "Graham's Landing". Later it was renamed by Graham's son "Toledo" after Toledo, Ohio. And, he had a personal reason for the rename.

OK! First thing to do when you visit Toledo is to go to the Pig Feathers BBQ Joint. My wife and I think it's one of the best BBQ places we have ever ate at, period! You'll be shocked!

The second or, first place (depending if you want to eat right away or not) is to visit the Michael Gibbons Gallery.  Michael is an exceptional artist and has a super nice gallery for you to view his work.

The first two photos were taken on the waterfront. The next four taken at the Yaquina Pacific Railroad Museum.
