Things To Do In Portland

If you ever visit Portland or, even if you live in Portland, one of the cool places to visit is the Sellwood Neighborhood.

It's located in the far reaches of the southeast part of the city and, very easy to get to. Besides all the cool older homes that have been renovated in Sellwood area, there is Antique Row, which stretches along 13th Avenue.

It's not all antiques though, there are chic restaurants, cool gift shops, bakeries and so on. What you do is stroll down thirteenth, take everything in, and then just maybe head down to the Sellwood Riverfront Park which is right on the Willamette River. It's just a few blocks away.

And/or, then head on over to Oaks Amusement Park, which is right next door.

Parallel to the amusement park is Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge which you can spend hours hiking around while taking in the wild life.

All are super fun places to take the family!

I posted a smattering of photos here taken along Thirteenth Avenue. It's not a photo tour...I just walk down the street and take photos...that's all! (Ooh, when you come to the "Sacred Root" sign photo that is a real live crow)

There will be more photos to come in future posts. Please enjoy!

Mcmenamins - Edgefield Art

I won't go into much detail about Mcmenamins - Edgefield in Troutdale, Oregon other than say it's a cool place to visit. It's not too far from Portland and easy to get to.

The thing intrigues me about the whole place is the art! It's unique...it's like stuff you have never seen before. It's everywhere in their main hotel/lodge. It's hanging on the walls, it's painted on doors...it's everywhere you look!

So, take a moment and enjoy! And, stay tuned...there will be more.

I will also apologize to the artists as some of their names do not show up in the photos.

Downtown Portland OR Three

More pics of Downtown Portland, Oregon! First photo is of a giant chess set in Director's Park. This is a real game that is going on.

The second is the Multnomah County Library which is huge and is an Oregon Landmark. All the rest of the photos are of the City United-Country United Mural in downtown. I had to shoot it in three sections to get it all.

The Mural is located in a neglected plaza on SW 11th and about Morrison...sort of out of the realm of things. But, it's interesting!

Downtown Portland OR Two

This post features a few photos of Pioneer Place in Downtown Portland, Oregon. It is an upscale shopping mall that is, for the most part, underground. Huge tunnels going in different directions that lead to food courts, shopping and cinemas.

I don't know why they think any of it should have been built underground. It should be all open air! It never rains in Oregon.

The last photo here is of the "Bridge City Cafe". Really, only the natives know that Portland's nickname is "Bridge City" because of the many bridges in the area.

Downtown Portland OR

Tripping to Downtown Portland, Oregon is fun! You should try it.

My wife and I live in Oregon City which is a bit south of Portland. Instead of taking our car downtown we chose to ride the bus. It cost a whole dollar for a senior round trip if you stay within so many hours.

The thing about taking the bus is you don't have the parking hassle nor, the driving hassle. But, there are lots of folks that don't like buses...that's OK! To each their own.

There is lots to see and do. The first pic here is the Max Train headed toward Gresham. Off to the left is the "Pioneer Courthouse" and off the the right is "The Nines Hotel" and "Macys" which are in the same building...the old Meier and Frank Department Store...an Oregon Landmark.

Neither my wife or I have been shopping in the downtown Macy's for awhile. What a treat...they have turned into a fun and first-class shopping facility. A must place to go. And, the customer service was exceptional and friendly.

The second photo here is of "Pioneer Square" which has numerous free musical events and many other super activities. It is about as empty of people as it gets in this photo.

The third and fifth photos are of the famous Pioneer Courthouse. Finally, the fourth photo is of the clock tower on top of the old "Oregon Journal Newspaper" building...which probably only the older folks of my generation know about. At night it is a phenomenal site all lite up.

How About Sandy, Oregon

Sandy, Oregon is one of the major gateways to Mt. Hood. It has about 10,000 folks and is right smack dab in the middle of the old Sam Barlow Trail.

It is located about 20 miles east of Portland on Highway 26 and, a must place to visit if you come to Portland and/or on the way to scenic Mt.Hood to ski or sightsee.

Among other things, Sandy has a first-class historic museum right on the main drag and it is free.

And, after you visit the museum: One place to eat in particular is the "Trout Pub" (Google + Link)! Hey, best Halibut Fish and Chips around and, at a reasonable price. Also, excellent hamburgers, french fries and you name it.

Back to the Sandy Historical Museum. It is a first-class facility. The folks are all volunteers and it was obvious they were excited about the history of their town and, passing on their knowledge to folks like my wife and I.

The first photo here is a huge mural on the side of a building. The rest of the photos are of the historical museum. Enjoy!

Hawthorne | Portland Oregon 4

All week I have been featuring the Hawthorne District in Southeast Portland on my blog. I would be amiss if I didn't mention the "Pastaworks".

A first-class and unique establishment for meeting your gourmet needs. There are three stores in Portland.

They boast having the largest selection of Italian wine in the country. But, they have an excellent selection of cheeses, veggies not to mention freshly made pasta. Their gourmet selection of meats is unparalleled.

My wife and I usually op for their freshly made pasta anytime that we are near the store. I couldn't help myself but to photograph the veggies and posturerised them.

Hawthorne | Portland Oregon 3

We have been talking about Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, Oregon and how cool of a neighborhood it is. Well, it's time to discover some of the neat places that are there.

Nick's Coney Island in the Hawthorne District has had a reputation for years as having the "best dog" around. Nick, himself is long gone but, there are new owners and they are doing a super job of keeping up the image.

So, where did my wife and I go to eat when we were visiting the Hawthorne Area? Nick's of course!

I have to admit I ordered what they call a "Sloppy Hamburger" and not a coney. The burger was excellent, came with good fresh, not frozen fries and, was well priced...a "full meal deal".

On the other hand, my wife ordered a double coney and a Tomato Basil Soup as her side. The coney came with a very thick meat sauce...not with a traditional chili sauce per se. The hot dogs they serve, as well as the sauce, are first-class.  The soup was extremely thick and very tasteful.

From there we went to "Ben and Jerry's" to load up on ice cream. They are expensive, but worth the price. Need I say more?
