The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is one of the most popular lighthouses on
the Oregon Coast. It is located at the north end of Newport and jets out
about a mile from the main shoreline.
It can easily be seen from out at
sea. It actually replaced a lighthouse that is only three miles away.
Recently, it received a well deserved paint job.
Yaquina Head Light was first lit August 20, 1873, and automated in 1966. It is ninety three feet tall and is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon.
The lighthouse has even been in the movies: A setting for the "Moesko Island Lighthouse" in the 2002 film "The Ring"! It appeared in a 1983 movie "Hysterical" and, in "The Nancy Drew Mysteries"...the episode "The Mystery of Pirate's Cove".
The lighthouse sits on some 100 acres and, includes The Yaquina Head Interpretive Center which opened in 1997.
Exhibits include the history and preservation of the lighthouse, and the
marine life found in tide pools. The Center includes an excellent gift shop operated by "Friends Of Yaquina Lighthouses".
