Why I Keep Returning to Oregon’s Working Harbors

There is something special about an Oregon Coast harbor before the day becomes busy.

The fishing boats rest against the docks, gulls circle overhead, and the water reflects pieces of the sky, weathered buildings, rigging, and colorful hulls. Even when the harbor appears quiet, you can sense the hard work and history behind every vessel.

Living in Newport has given me many opportunities to photograph the working waterfront. I am especially drawn to commercial fishing boats because each one has its own personality. Boats such as My Lee, Evolution, Little J, The Griffin, and Sea Breeze are more than interesting subjects. Their worn paint, nets, equipment, and sturdy shapes tell stories about life along the Oregon Coast.

When I create fishing boat artwork, I often begin with one of my original photographs. I may then adjust the color, light, texture, sky, or surrounding scenery to bring out the mood I experienced when I first saw the boat.

Sometimes I create a realistic harbor scene. Other times, I place the vessel beside an old fish cannery, rustic chowder house, or weathered dock. These additions allow me to celebrate both the boat and the disappearing character of historic waterfront communities.

Commercial fishing boats also make distinctive nautical wall art. Unlike a peaceful sailboat scene, a working vessel brings strength, authenticity, and a little adventure into a living room, office, den, beach house, or coastal home.

Perhaps that is why I keep returning to the harbor. There is always another boat, another changing sky, and another story waiting along the docks.

Few automobiles capture the elegance and imagination of the Art Deco era quite like the classic Cord. With its flowing bodywork, unusual engineering and unmistakable front-end design, the Cord looks less like an ordinary automobile and more like a rolling work of art.

Even today, a Cord attracts attention wherever it appears.

The Beginning of the Cord Automobile

The Cord automobile was named after entrepreneur E. L. Cord, whose business interests included Auburn, Duesenberg and several other transportation companies.

Introduced in 1929, the Cord L-29 became the first successful mass-produced American automobile to use front-wheel drive. This engineering arrangement allowed the car to sit lower than many competing luxury automobiles, giving it a long and graceful appearance.

The L-29 was produced in several elegant body styles, including sedans, cabriolets and open touring cars. Its long hood, low roofline and sweeping fenders made it one of the most distinctive luxury automobiles of its time.

The Revolutionary Cord 810

Cord returned with an even more dramatic automobile for 1936—the Cord 810.

Designed by Gordon Buehrig with assistance from Vince Gardner, the Cord 810 featured a remarkably low silhouette, front-wheel drive and unitized body construction. It was also the first production automobile to feature retractable headlights.

Its wide horizontal grille wrapped around the front of the car, creating the famous shape that later became known as the “coffin nose.” The absence of a traditional upright radiator grille helped make the Cord appear unusually clean, streamlined and modern.

The 1937 Cord 812

The Cord 812 followed in 1937 and continued the dramatic styling of the 810. Available in several body styles, the 810 and 812 became the final automobiles produced by the Cord division of the Auburn Automobile Company.

Although Cord production ended in 1937, the design never disappeared from automotive history. The automobile’s hidden headlights, low profile, sculpted fenders and horizontal grille influenced generations of automobile designers.

Why the Cord Remains Special

The classic Cord represents a time when automobile manufacturers were willing to experiment with bold engineering and imaginative styling.

Retro Cars in Era Settings: Vintage Automobile Art with a Sense of Time

Classic cars have a special way of bringing the past back to life. A polished grille, whitewall tires, chrome reflections, old storefronts, brick streets, service stations, mansions, diners, and drive-ins all work together to tell a story. 

My retro car art goal is to create wall art that appeals to collectors, car lovers, and anyone who enjoys nostalgia. These pieces are not simply pictures of automobiles.

Some of my favorite subjects include Ford Model T racers, 1930s sedans, Packards, Auburn Speedsters, Mercury customs, Chevrolet delivery cars, and old pickup trucks. 

Each vehicle has its own personality. Some feel elegant and refined, while others feel rugged, fast, playful, or full of small-town charm.created to capture that feeling — not just the automobile itself, but the era it belongs to.

Instead of placing a vintage car in a plain background, I enjoy building scenes that feel historically inspired. A 1930s Ford sedan may sit in front of an old showroom. 

A Packard might rest in the driveway of a grand period mansion. A Mercury or Chevrolet may appear near a classic service station, a small-town grocery store, or a Route 66-style diner. These settings help the viewer imagine what it might have felt like to see these cars when they were part of everyday life.

Era settings make these cars feel more authentic. A vintage vehicle parked in front of a modern building can still look beautiful, but placing it in a period scene gives it more emotional power. 

The artwork becomes a story: a quiet morning at a used car lot, a delivery truck outside a neighborhood store, a race car on an old dirt track, or a luxury automobile in front of a mansion driveway.
