Swan Island Dahlias Redux

Swan Island Dahlias are the premier and the largest dahlia grower in the world. Fortunately, they are a short drive from my home and I can peek in on them all during the growing season.

It is a place you have to go to personally to appreciate.  My photos do not do them justice.

1) Encyclopedia of Dahlias (In this delightful and profusely illustrated encyclopedia, noted hybridizer and nurseryman Bill McClaren provides an authoritative account of garden-worthy dahlias for every garden design. Nearly 700 selections are included, complete with notes on their history, awards, and cultural peculiarities. Additional chapters on dahlia care and propagation, dahlia species in nature, hybridizing, and showing dahlias add to this well-rounded overview. Thorough appendices with resources on dahlia societies, nurseries, and gardens complete the book.)

2) Dahlias: A Colour Guide (A Colour Guide profiles some 1,800 varieties of this stunning popular flower. Arranged in alphabetical order, and illustrated throughout with over 500 color photographs, it is essential for both dahlia enthusiasts and exhibitors.)

Flower Garden Pictures Six

One of the most unusual flower in our yard are Gladiolus. Mainly, because of color.

The hangup is the height. They get rather tall and sometimes grow at an angle and are hard to stake up.

The Hydrangea shown here is multi-colored. Mainly, because of soil content.

The English Roses are very robust and grow like mad...they require a lot of care but are beautiful.

Dahlias are my favorite! They are really diverse and require little care.

A great and recommended book from Amazon: Flowers By Carolyne Roehm  (With a gardener’s understanding and a an elegant eye, the author shows us the flowers she has cultivated for decades in and around her historic Connecticut home. While alternating dramatic close-ups with portraits of lovely arrangements and sweeping views of her land, Roehm writes with wit, emotion, and affection of what flowers have meant to her, as well as of the joys and travails of the committed gardener’s life.)

Flower Garden Pictures Five

Yet another post featuring the flowers in our yard. This time a Canna Lily, a Red Dahlia, an English Rose and a "What Is It?" flower.

I'm having a hard time keeping up with all the new blooms we are having in our yard in Oregon. What a dilemma!

Please take your time and enjoy the pictures of our flowers. I always think about the fact that they are
only with us a short time and then they go away until the following year. Please enjoy!
