Yachats Coastal Gems Volkssport Club

My wife and I had the privilege of walking with the Yachats Coastal Gems Volkssport Club on the first of July 2014.  The walk took place in South Beach (Newport, Oregon).

I didn't count...maybe a dozen walkers, total. The walk started at the end of the pier in the first photo, in which my wife and I did the 5K versus the 7K walk, ending at the Oregon Coast Aquarium and looping back.

Lots of things to see on your way. The pier is cool. You step out almost to the middle of the Yaquina Bay. You'll see people crabbing and fishing...maybe more crabbing.

You walk past the main Rogue Brewery and head to the NOAA building and then join the Hatfield Estuary Trail, which is magneficent.

As you walk the trail, you pass past the front of the Hatfield Marine Science Center. On the trail, you normally see a variety of birds.

However, we didn't see too many while on the trail, like we do normally during the winter and spring months.

Although, there was one birder, complete with binoculars, we ran across. He was looking for a Grey catbird, spotted earlier...not native to the area at all.

Next, we entered through the rear entrance of the Oregon Coast Aquarium, with permission,  and then we headed back to the start.

To sum things up: It was a great walk on a beautiful day. It didn't rain once. However, for folks wanting to move to Newport, don't get your hopes up...there is only one sunny day per year on average! And, that's pushing it!

Newport Walking Club

Since moving to Newport, Oregon my wife and I have joined two walking clubs...the Newport Ramblers and the Newport Walking Club.

The Ramblers go up and down the Central Coast for walks and, are held usually in the morning. Whereas, the "Walking Club" sticks to an evening schedule that starts at 5:15 PM and walks Newport proper. The latter being more in tune with working folks.

The walking route that we took on St. Paddy's Day started at the Newport Library went east across Highway 101 and then southeast overlooking Yaquina Bay. Back under 101 to Yaquina Bay State park and then to Nye Beach and, back up to the Library.

Besides being a very scenic walk, add to that, comradery, photo ops and, working toward a healthy heart. 

I didn't photograph every inch of the walk. I started probably after a mile or so. The first two photos are out of sequence but, after that are in order of the walk we took.

Ramblers Club

Last Thursday, March 13th the Newport Ramblers Walking Club was off to Lincoln City, Oregon and a long trek on the beach.

Our walk, started at D River (First photo, below, which is the shortest river in the world) and, the idea was to walk a distance north... returning the same way, for a walk of five to six miles total.

However, my wife and I cut it short at the half point and, returned on Highway 101 to our car instead of walking back on the beach.

On the way back from Lincoln City, to our home in Newport, we stopped at the Salishan Spa and Golf Resort (About 7 miles south of Lincoln City) and, took yet another walk that follows the south side of Siletz Bay and parallels the golf course.

A very different type of a walk in that it was more of a nature walk than the beach...not that the beach can't be. To our surprise, we had the privilege of observing a Blue Heron close up and personal. It was so still, that at first we thought it was a decoy. It was not!

The Salishan Trail is short in itself but, can be extended into a 5 mile hike if you continue onto the beach and the Siletz Spit to the right.

I will go out on a limb and say that the Salishan Nature Trail is a must walk for walkers and birders!

Local Walking Groups

For the intrepid "Newport Ramblers" walking group on February 26, 2014...a scheduled 5 to six mile jaunt from the Agate Beach Wayside to the North Jetty along the beach in Newport, Oregon.

All level, all sand and some neat things to look at. You have to look out for high tides, though.

It is a must walk for any walking group! Let's qualify that...a must walk for anyone for enjoyment and to maintain a healthy heart.

You can start from the North Jetty, with access and parking at the Yaquina State Park. Maybe a little easier to find if you are not familiar with Newport.

Below, the "whimsical" Sylvia Beach Hotel...a must place to visit in Nye Beach. Each of the twenty rooms are unique and are named, themed after a famous author. And, guess what? There are no TVs...or phones.

Yachats Coastal Gems Volkswalking

Some photo taking along the route in Lincoln City, Oregon where my wife and I joined the "Yachats Coastal Gems Volkswalking" group in a walk north on 101 and back south on the beach...a five kilometer distance. Or, a ten kilometer walk for the veterans.

My wife and I chose the five kilometer variety until we are a little more acclimated to the longer distance.

The walk really paid off when we were on the beach...we found a glass float. If you are lucky...really lucky you just might find a hand-crafted blown glass float on the seven mile stretch of beach in Lincoln City to celebrate Lincoln City's Millennium Float project...each float is "finder's keepers" and has a number on it that you register. People come from all around the country to try to find a glass float or other artistic items on the beach.
