Even More On Astoria Oregon

Here are some more photos taken in Astoria, Oregon on an absolutely beautiful day. The first photo is of the Columbia River Pilot House.

If you are not familiar with what a River Pilot does they kind ships at sea into the Columbia River. The Columbia River Bar is one of the most dangerous in the world.

They climb up from the Pilot Boats to the ships and take over the controls and guide them into the Columbia River. One of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Think of climbing up in a cargo net in high seas!

More Of Astoria Oregon

More photos of Astoria, Oregon.

The first photo is of the Wet Dog Cafe and Astoria Brewing Company (a combo thing). The second photo are freighters moored in the Columbia River with a seagull supervisor taking it all in.

The third pic is a Coast Guard Cutter and the old "Columbia Lightship". I feel that the Coast Guard is one of the most thankless jobs out there. If you have ever been across the Columbia River Bar you would understand why when they have to go out there and rescue someone.

The Columbia Lightship was once moored out at sea to guide ships into the river from the ocean. It has been replaced by a new buoy system.

The fourth and fifth photos are of the Ironwood a "Buoy Tender"! You might want to check out the link.

The final photo is a object photographed outside the Maritime Museum. I don't have a clue what it is.

Astoria Oregon

Besides Bandon and Newport in Oregon...Astoria is a must place to go to on the Oregon Coast. Lots of things to see and do...tons of things to see and do.

Since this is a photo blog, we will just say: "One of the favorite things to do is walk done the waterfront boardwalk and take pictures!" And, after you walked the entire length, you can take a trolley back to where you started.

It stretches for miles and you can take in all the commercial freighters navigating the Columbia River as they sail in from the Pacific. Take in all the cool restaurants along the way, especially the " Baked Alaska"! And, take in some neat wall murals.

Salishan

Few folks know about this cool walking path in Gleneden, Oregon which starts at "The Shops at the Salishan Resort" and ends up at the Siletz Bay Spit (off to the right in the first photo).

Also, you can veer off to the left to get to the beach at the end of the trail. The Pacific Ocean is just a tad beyond the houses on the Spit.

The path follows the contour of  Siletz Bay, to the right, with the golf course off to the left. It's a well maintained path with a beautiful view. Puppy dogs love it!

Siletz Bay, the River, the Place is named after the Siletz Indians who are an Oregon Native American Tribe.

The Salishan Resort is located just a few miles south of Lincoln City. It was a super hot spot years ago for the affluent golfer, food and spa lover. That has calmed a bit. But, it is still a very nice place with quality shopping, vacationing and, of course golfing.

All the photos here were converted to High Dynamic Range or, HDR Photography.
