The Bay

The Bay..."Yaquina Bay" is located in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. It is home to Oregon's and, probably the west coast's largest fishing fleet.

The fishing boats and the sail boat are caught in an early morning fog with just enough sun peaking through to make for a majestic scene.

It is a short distance to the jetty and to the Pacific Ocean. Commercial fishing and crabbing can be lucrative. However, it is a hard life. But, it is in the blood!

Part of the famous Yaquina Bay Bridge is in the background!

I processed the original capture into a HDR ( High Dynamic Range) photo by combining three different exposures. Next, I converted the image into an unusual digital painting.

Historic Home Art

Below is the John M. Moyer House is in Brownsville. No, not that Brownsville...Brownsville, Oregon!

It is right off of I5 between Corvallis and Eugene! It is where "Stand By Me" was filmed although, they refer to it as Castle Rock in the movie.

It is an absolute cool little town where they have restored many of the original, old buildings. The Moyer House which was built in 1881. It is in the "Italianate" style architecture.

A tour was made of the home and it is absolutely gorgeous! In 1974 the Moyer House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This image has been processed into a High Dynamic Range photo and then converted to a digital painting.

Covered Bridge Art

This is the Weddle Bridge in Sweet Home, Oregon. It is a 120 foot long wooden covered bridge.

The original bridge was built in 1937 and, rebuilt in 1990. The bridge originally spanned Thomas Creek.

In 1989, a Sweet Home group rebuilt the Weddle Bridge across Ames Creek in Sankey Park.

I combined a High Dynamic Range image with an unusual texture to give it a painted look. At one time Oregon had more covered bridges than any state west of the Mississippi!

Train Station Art

This neat little train station, located in Oregon City, Oregon is the last stop as you head to Portland and points north to Seattle via Amtrak. Also, you can catch the train heading south to Eugene and beyond.

What caught my eye about the train depot is the nostalgic architecture. They have mixed the old train depot buildings with the new.

The yellow and brown shelter here dates back decades. But, of course has been remodeled.

This image was made using three different exposures and combining/converting those into a High Dynamic Range (HDR) photo.

Antique Truck Art

This vintage, antique truck was found on a farm in Molalla, Oregon. It was raining and, as you can see there is no cab over the truck.

And, it has probably been sitting in the same spot for years. It definitely has a nostalgic feel!

Three different exposures were taken of the truck and, combined in special software, to end up giving it more dynamic feel...HDR (High Dynamic Range Photography).

Crab Shack Wall Art

Bandon,Oregon is home to Tony's Crabshack on the Oregon Coast! It's small, crowded and has seafood to die for! And, it is close to the Pacific Ocean and the beach! Tony's is the "beach"!

This capture was made on a very early Sunday morning...no tourist around. The image was converted into High Dynamic Range Photography or, HDR.

If you are looking for a great Seafood Cocktail, Tony's has great choices: Ocean Shrimp, Dungeness Crab, Oyster, Crab and Shrimp Combo and Wild Prawn. For soups they have fresh New England Style Clam Chowder or, Cioppino to die for.

Of course, they have an array of delectable seafood salads. And, then there are the Seafood Pastas like: Smoked Salmon Alfredo, Scampi Montezuma and Steamer Clams or Prawns. However, it doesn't end there!

1941 Dodge Truck

This is around a 1941 Dodge Truck. It was, at one time a "Tillamook Cheese Factory" truck that delivered dairy related products from the factory to outlets.

Obviously, it has been set out to pasture in Hood River, Oregon...which is a long ways from the Tillamook Cheese Factory!

1935 Auburn Speedster 866

Along with the Cord Automobile, in the 1930's was another striking design and that was the Auburn Boattail Speedster 866. It was powered by a 4.6 liter straight eight that, with a supercharger option could top 100 mph.

Now days that may not be a big hoop-de-do but, in those days it was earth shattering! This particular Auburn was featured many years ago at a Concours d'Elegance in Oregon.

It was an absolutely gorgeous car. This image has been converted to a digital image!

Let's Get Ready To Rumble!

This Ford Hot Rod was sitting all by itself on a street in Oregon. I just got down on the knees and took the shot!

On the left side is a Cafe and on the right side is a courthouse...nobody is around. This is a vintage Ford Hot Rod just begging to be raced!

Three different exposures were taken of the Hot Rod and then combined and converted to High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR). I then converted the image to a digital painting!

Portland Night Photos!

Portland (PDX), Oregon has a cool skyline so, I thought it appropriate that I post a few images that I have captured from time to time. I don't live in Portland I live in Newport on the Oregon Coast.

However, I like visiting the Portland Area. I lived in the area for years, went to school there and have many fond memories.

Obviously, all the photos here have been taken at night. All the images have been converted through High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) to bring out more detail, light and color.

All the images here were taken from the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade. All were taken with a digital Pentax camera using a tripod.

The Willamette River runs from south to north to the Columbia River through Portland. Portland has many bridges that link the east side of Portland to the west and, is affectionately called "Bridge City"!

Downtown Portland Skyline At Night (LINK) The reflections on the Willamette River really show up if the water is fairly calm, like it was this particular evening. The bright street lights are coming from the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. You are looking west, at downtown from the Vera Katz Eastbank Promenade...and, fairly close to the Morrison Bridge. The most remarkable building in the image is the KOIN Center. It is pictured as the one with the green lite top. It was built in 1984 and is 35 stories high. The tall building is the "Wells Fargo Building" is 41 stories and was built in 1972.

Morrison Bridge (LINK) What is unique about this capture are the reflections of light coming off of the Morrison Bridge. Usually, the water is not this still and it results in very little distortion of the colorful lights, red, yellow, green and blue coming off the bridge. The Morrison is a basule bridge (drawbridge). This particular capture was taken as a panorama. It picks up almost the entire bridge and part of skyline downtown. However, the focal point of the image is really the light on the water.

View From The East Bank (LINK) This is looking at downtown from an East Bank dock! It is "Blue Hour"! The Willamette River is calm and serene and, lights are reflecting off the water with no distortion.

The Hawthorne Bridge (LINK) This bridge is just one of the many cool bridges in what is known as "Bridge City". Another name for the Hawthorne may be "Bicycle Bridge" because hundreds and hundreds bike over it daily. It is a bascule bridge (drawbridge).

Morrison Bridge At The Cinco De Mayo Celebration (LINK) Cinco De Mayo is traditionally celebrated at the west end of the Morrison Bridge in the Tom McCall Waterfront Park.To the right is the colorful Ferris Wheel that is part of the celebration. The Willamette River is in the foreground! The capture was made at the end of "Blue Hour", just before total darkness. Two other Morrison bridges were built earlier. One in 1887 and, the other in 1905 giving the one built in 1887 historical significance. The 1887 bridge was the first Willamette River crossing bridge in Portland. The current Morrison Bridge is a Chicago-type bascule draw span and, has length of 760 feet. It accommodates six lanes of traffic. Clearance underneath the bridge is adequate for most river traffic. Opening the bridge is only necessary about 30 times per month.

Under The Bridge (LINK) This photograph was captured from underneath the Morrison Street Bridge in Portland, Oregon.In the background is the Willamette River, the Hawthorne Bridge and downtown. Light is reflecting off of the support structure of the bridge giving it a golden hue.

Walkway To Morrison Bridge PDX (LINK) This is the walkway to the Morrison Bridge in Portland, Oregon! The capture is from the approach to the bridge from the Eastbank Esplanade and is looking west toward downtown. The original bridge was built in 1887 and was a wooden truss swing span bridge. It was the first Willamette River bridge in Portland. And, had the distinction of the longest bridge west of the Mississippi River. The Morrison Bridge was rebuilt in the 1950's. The image was captured during blue hour.


View From The Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade (LINK) This is the view from The Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade which is a cool bike and walking path on Portland, Oregon's East Side. Bicyclist, walkers alike enjoy a magnificent area that parallels the Willamette River and the Waterfront. The Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade is one and one half miles long, starting north at the Steel Bridge, and then going south with connections to east side neighborhoods as well as across the river to Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park. It was formally called the " Eastbank Esplanade". It was renamed for former Portland mayor Vera Katz in 2004. Her statue is featured near the Hawthorne Bridge, which is not far from where this image was originated. The Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade features a 1,200 foot floating walkway and, is the longest of its kind in the United States. This image also features beautiful reflections of Portland's skyline, the Morrison Bridge and, street lights in the Willamette River. There is a dead calm in the water which makes the reflections even more pronounced! The Marine Fire Station is the building to the immediate right.

Evolution

Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon is home to Oregon's largest fishing fleet. It is also home to some cool looking fishing vessels.

And, most commercial fisherman take very good care of their boats. They have too to survive out at sea.

The scene is a drizzly, foggy morning at Dock 5 on the Historic Bayfront. Most boats are in, conditions at sea aren't real great and it is probably to dangerous to go out and fish due to sea conditions.

Classic Flatbed Truck In Pink

This old and classic flatbed truck sits on a farm in Doyle, California...close to the Nevada border. It has seen its day but, eye catching and very colorful...IN PINK!

Somebody has gone to a lot of trouble to make this old truck a standout. Best it can be determined this is a circa 1948 White Truck.

Three different images were taken of this White Flatbed Truck and then combined in High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) software to bring out the full dynamic range of the capture.

The White Motor Company was an automobile, truck, and bus manufacturer in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1900-1980. If you would like to explore this image, or others, please see links below!

Field Of Tulips

One of the best tulip farms is in Woodburn, Oregon. It is the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm and encompasses some forty acres of stunning and beautiful tulips.

They feature some 117 varieties of tulips. And, it seems that each tulip is a different color. Of course, that is an illusion.

What is not an illusion is this capture. It was made fairly close to the ground and it seems like there are tulips as far as the eye can see.

Vintage And Prestige Automobiles!

The Cord Automobile is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. And, certainly, among the most prestigious and innovative automobiles made at the time!

I captured many angles of the car...even being able to sit in the Cord and photograph the interior. And, I was privileged to spend a lot of time talking to the owner about his automobile.

I circled and circled the car. I did not find any flaws in a car that was eighty years old. When I sat in the car, everything interior-wise, like the dashboard looked dated, like it should. But, it looked brand new.

What blew my mind is that, hardly anyone was looking at the Cord. Folks were off gawking at the hot rods and eating hot dogs.

Most were oblivious to this beautiful automobile, which was a shame!

Cord was the brand name produced by the Auburn Automobile Company from 1929 to 1932 and again in 1936 and 1937.

The founder, E.L. Cord was responsible for building different and innovative cars. Unfortunately, they didn't always turn a profit.

However, you have to think about the era and the Great Depression. That had a lot to due with it.

1947-49 Chevy Pickup

It is believed this is a circa 1947-49 Chevrolet Pickup. There were just subtle differences between years for this pickup.

When photographed, there were many parts missing on the truck. So, good-luck identifying the year!

This Chevy sat in a field in a rural Oregon setting. I mean "rural", and in a pasture with other cars and trucks that have seen their day.

You could drive by this field from week to week and never see the same car or truck twice. Don't ask me how this happens.

Three different exposures were made of the Chevy Pickup. They were then combined and converted into High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR).

Buoy Art

Hobo Junction is on the Long Beach, Peninsula in Washington State. And, Hobo Junction has to be the "Buoy Capitol" of the world.

There are so many buoys and other nautical type things that it is almost overwhelming. There is a bunch of everything.

I couldn't help but photograph this scene and turn into a buoy art piece. And, I am only depicting a small part of it.

Although, it's right on one of the main Long Beach drags, Hobo Junction is real easy to miss since it is on a side street. If you are looking for nautical decor, well?

1937 Studebaker

This is one cool 1937 Studebaker! I found it in Carson City, Nevada. Being the age I am, I remember Studebakers as not too popular a car.

In the fifties, they were very innovative. My friend's dad worked for a dealership and would bring a different one home with him every night. It was a very impressive automobile. Good looking and way ahead of its time but, never popular!

Below, the owner has restored this 1937 Studebaker to perfect. It looked like it had just came off the assembly line, only better! It's a classic!

Digital Painting

I am delving into digital painting head first! It is an entirely different process that what I am use to. Basically, I am a photographer and I love it! However, I am a maverick and I like being different with my art forms.

I still do the same things with my images. Meaning, I clean them up and often convert them to High Dynamic Range Photography to bring out more dynamics in any given photo. But, now I am taking a big step forward converting them into digital paintings.

It's lots of work but, the results can be astounding! So, please check out the images below and tell me what you think.

Clackamas County Historical Museum Two

Another post with photos from the Clackamas County Historical Museum in Oregon City, Oregon. Here is the first post link: Clackamas County Historical Museum in case you missed it.

Some of the best historic-type photography I have seen anywhere was at this Museum and features a gentleman by the name of Ralph Eddy.

My wife and I didn't have a clue who he was...we do now. In a word, and even by today's standards, his work is phenomenal.

His portraiture, landscapes, whatever are crystal sharp..."tack sharp" in photography talk. The Museum is full of his work and, if you didn't see any other exhibits, you would want to see his.

If you google him you won't find much of anything and, that's a shame!

The first photo here is his camera facing out a window. Ok, the LED display, as most folks would call it now days, results in the composition being upside down and backwards.

The third shot is an old cash register from the West Linn Water Department which is right across the Willamette River from Oregon City. In fact Eddy's camera is facing the Willamette and West Linn although, you can't make out any detail.

The fourth photos is a Native America historic hieroglyphic taken from a rock that is not shown. The fifth is a Native American carving. The last photo is the gift shop which is kind of unusual...it's more like an exhibit area itself.

Some of these photos here have been converted to High Dynamic Range Photography or HDR. Meaning, three different exposures (an underexposed, an overexposed and one that is spot on). All are then processed in special software. Enjoy!

Covered Bridges Two

Last post on the covered bridges in Cottage Grove, Oregon. The first one here, the Chambers Bridge is fairly close to downtown and is an old railway bridge.

The second bridge, the Centennial is right downtown and is a pedestrian bridge. I think of all the covered bridges that we saw in the Cottage Grove area, the Chambers is my favorite.
