Fishing Fleet In Yaquina Bay

Newport, Oregon on the Central Coast boosts the largest fishing fleet in Oregon. There is easy access and, a fairly tame bar to cross to get to the Pacific Ocean.

Good fishing and crabbing makes for an excellent port for the fisherman. Yaquina Bay and the Yaquina Bay Bridge are in the background.

You can tell by the static crab rings on the boats that crabbing is at a standstill and many boats are in port.

This is a photograph that I have added texture to give a unique painting effect.

The Bay

The Bay..."Yaquina Bay" is located in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. It is home to Oregon's and, probably the west coast's largest fishing fleet.

The fishing boats and the sail boat are caught in an early morning fog with just enough sun peaking through to make for a majestic scene.

It is a short distance to the jetty and to the Pacific Ocean. Commercial fishing and crabbing can be lucrative. However, it is a hard life. But, it is in the blood!

Part of the famous Yaquina Bay Bridge is in the background!

I processed the original capture into a HDR ( High Dynamic Range) photo by combining three different exposures. Next, I converted the image into an unusual digital painting.

Please enjoy!

Yaquina Head Lighthouse

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is one of the most popular lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. It is located at the north end of Newport and jets out about a mile from the main shoreline.

It can easily be seen from out at sea. It actually replaced a lighthouse that is only three miles away. Recently, it received a well deserved paint job.

Yaquina Head Light was first lit August 20, 1873, and automated in 1966. It is ninety three feet tall and is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon.

The lighthouse has even been in the movies: A setting for the "Moesko Island Lighthouse" in the 2002 film "The Ring"! It appeared in a 1983 movie "Hysterical" and, in "The Nancy Drew Mysteries"...the  episode "The Mystery of Pirate's Cove".

The lighthouse sits on some 100 acres and, includes The Yaquina Head Interpretive Center which opened in 1997.  Exhibits include the history and preservation of the lighthouse, and the marine life found in tide pools. The Center includes an excellent gift shop operated by "Friends Of Yaquina Lighthouses".

Underneath The Yaquina Bay Bridge

This capture was made underneath the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast.  The bridge spans Yaquina Bay. The view is from South Beach looking north.

It was built in 1936 in the art deco style. It is one of the most recognizable bridges on Route 101 and was designed by Conde McCullough.

Before the bridge was built  the only way to get across the bay was by ferry.

Aquero

The "Aguero" is a fishing vessel, located in Newport on the Oregon Coast. Aquero, in Spanish translates to "omen"!

One meaning is that it is a bad omen for fishermen to learn how to swim?? However, we can assume that the name "Aguero" on this vessel is intended to be a "good omen", whether you can swim or not!

The "Aguero" is moored in Yaquina Bay. Newport boosts the largest fishing fleet in Oregon and possibly the West Coast. This scene features a heavy fog early in the morning.

This capture has been converted to digital painting. However, it's not that simple! Three different exposures were taken of the Aguero, combined to bring out all the dynamics of the scene...combining light, color to make the image more vibrant. Then the results were turned into a digital painting.

Bandon Boat Basin At Dawn

This is part of the Bandon waterfront and boat basin, located on the Southern Oregon Coast. You can't see the Pacific Ocean in the background but, you can see the Coquille River Lighthouse off to the right.

No breeze, so Old Glory is not flying.

Bandon is a very unusual place. It is small, and has a charm not readily found elsewhere. It has undoubtedly the most pristine beaches in the world. And, you can take a stroll on the beach and not see anyone else!

World Bridge Art

This is the Alsea Bay Bridge. It spans the Alsea Bay (River) in the town of Waldport, Oregon. The bridge is a short distance from the Pacific Ocean and, is located on the Central Oregon Coast...20 miles south of Newport.

The bridge was originally built in the 1930's in the Art Deco style. Since, the bridge has been rebuilt but, still retains some of the same Art Deco styling at both ends of the bridge.

Fishing, clamming and crabbing are popular recreational activities in Waldport. The population is around 2000 folks. This image has been converted to a digital painting!

Barnacle Art

The scene is Seal Rock Beach is on the Central Oregon Coast...10 miles south of Newport. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Oregon with numerous tide pools to investigate!

Seal Rock Beach has large off-shore rock formations where you can observe seal, sea lion, sea birds, and other marine life. It also provides excellent ocean views and a sandy beach.

This particular rock in the foreground is chuck full of barnacles. This image has been converted to digital paintography.

Harbor Art

These are scenes from Yaquina Bay in Newport, on the Oregon Coast. Newport boasts the largest fishing fleet in Oregon.

However, it's not all fishing boats, e.g.; the Tall Ship below.

Chelsea Rose And The Tall Ship (LINK) The Chelsea Rose, a permanently docked old fishing boat is over 100 years old. It is moored on Dock 3 on Newport, Oregon's Historic Bayfront. For years, folks from all over have been buying freshly caught fish and crabs right off the Chelsea Rose. The boat needs extensive repairs, to the point that they are probably going to send her to the boat graveyard. When the time comes it will sadden many because it has been a landmark on the Bayfront for so many years. Next to the Chelsea is a visiting Tall Ship...the "Hawaiian Chieftain".

Sylvia (LINK) In February of 2014, the F/V (Fishing Vessel) Sylvia was at sea and reported taking on water, that her pumps could not stay ahead of the leak. Bad news! The Coast Guard went to the rescue. However, the crew of the Sylvia were able to fire up a third pump which helped immensely. The Coast Guard installed another pump yet, got the water level down and patched the leak. This capture has been converted to a paintography image.

Nautical Art

This is Depoe Bay on the Oregon Coast. And, they boast the smallest harbor in the world.

Go under the bridge and you are in the Pacific Ocean...a very short trip! Depoe Bay was named for Siletz Indian Charles "Charley" Depot in 1894.

Part of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and part of the movie "Burning Plain" was filmed in Depoe Bay. Also, it is a hotbed of tourism...a very popular place for folks to visit! This image has been converted to Digital Paintography.

Wild Rose Art

The bank along the Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon is lined with gorgeous wild roses in the springtime. In the background, there is a combination of pleasure boats and fishing boats and, the beautiful Yaquina Bay Bridge.

Off to the right, are some fishermen headed for the Pacific Ocean to try and catch a halibut. The day is overcast and it is about ready to pour.

I converted the capture to High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) and then applied a special texture called "Image Luminance". It really added a "pop" to the rose bushes.

What is so special is the combination of a nautical scene with a floral scene!

Tom McCall Waterfront Park Artwork

This is the walkway along Tom McCall Waterfont Park, bordering the Willamette River. The Portland Maritime Museum is the boat off to the right.

Given any day, Portlanders love to walk along the river and take in the tranquility of the area. The Waterfront Park is downtown and, is very convenient for folks, who work in the area to take a nice walk during the lunch hour.

However, this capture was made on a Sunday and, many of the folks on a walk here come from all over. The Morrison Bridge is in the background and the high rises are on the east side. This image has been converted into a digital painting,

Bayfront Restaurant Art

This Mo's Seafood Restaurant is a staple on the Historic Bayfront in Newport on the Oregon Coast. Mo's goes back to 1946.

It started out as  "Freddie & Mo's"!  Later, it was renamed after the original owner Mohava "Mo" Niemi.

She is known as being the "Clam Chowder Queen" in Oregon. Not far away on the Bayfront, and across the street, is the original Mo's! The Mo's pictured here sits on a dock. The other one does not.

Paul Newman, Robert Kennedy and Henry Fonda ate at the original!

Dock Art

This cool wooden boat sits at a Yaquina River dock in Toledo, Oregon. Guessing it is a 1920's-30's style boat.

It looked to be pretty much restored. Toledo is seven miles inland from Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. Wooden boats, of any type seem to have that nostalgic look and feel whereas, everything in today's world is fiberglass.

Morrison Bridge Art

The Morrison Bridge is located in Portland, Oregon (PDX)! It is one of many bridges in Portland, which is also known as "Bridge City" because of the many bridges that cross the Willamette River.

What is unique about this capture are the reflections of light coming off of the Morrison Bridge. Usually the water is not this still and it results in very little distortion of the colorful lights, red, yellow, green and blue coming off the bridge.

The Morrison is a basule bridge (drawbridge). This particular capture was taken as a panorama. It picks up almost the entire bridge and part of skyline downtown. However, the focal point of the image is really the light on the water.

Yaquina Bay Wall Art!

Yaquina Bay is on the Oregon Coast in Newport,Oregon. The setting in the harbor is just after the sun has set. The orange color is striking!

Rather than have the setting sun as a focal point, the Yaquina Bay Bridge and, the boats add phenomenal reflections in the water. The Bay is calm and this just adds a dimension to the image.

The Yaquina Bay Bridge is Oregon's most recognizable bridges! The capture has been converted to a digital painting.

Tugboat Titan

Coos Bay on the Southern Oregon Coast is home to the "Titan" which is a sea going tugboat. It is moored on the Coos River.

Sea going tugs, like the Titan are much bigger than river tugs because they must go out into the Pacific Ocean and maneuver large ships...usually pushing them into harbors.
