Yaquina Bay Bridge Reflections

The Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport on the Oregon Coast is one of the most recognizable bridges in Oregon. It was constructed in 1936 to span Yaquina Bay from Newport, to what now is called South Beach.

Before, the only way to cross the Bay was by Ferry. And, in those days crossing could be a little treacherous.

This particular capture was made from South Beach, looking west. In the foreground, are wild rose bushes and, you can spot the rose hips this time of year.

The boats pictured are mainly pleasure boats and sailboats. Off to the left, is the world headquarters for Rogue Brewing Co.!

This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color. Texture was added for a unique final image!

Aquero

 The "Aguero" is a fishing vessel, located in Newport on the Oregon Coast. Aquero, in Spanish translates to "omen"! 

One meaning is that it is a bad omen for fishermen to learn how to swim?? However, we can assume that the name "Aguero" on this vessel is intended to be a "good omen", whether you can swim or not!

The "Aguero" is moored in Yaquina Bay. Newport boosts the largest fishing fleet in Oregon and possibly the West Coast. This scene features a heavy fog early in the morning.

 This capture has been converted to digital painting. However, it's not that simple! Three different exposures were taken of the Aguero, combined to bring out all the dynamics of the scene...combining light, color to make the image more vibrant. Then the results were turned into a digital painting.

Port Art

"Buy Your Crab Here!"  Chances are the fishing/crab boats are just returning after a night's fishing and crabbing off the Oregon Coast.

The scene is Dock 5 in Yaquina Bay, located in Newport on the Oregon Coast. Newport has the largest fishing fleet in Oregon.

Plenty of room to moor and, a rather safe bar to cross into the Pacific Ocean makes fishing and crabbing more feasible than many other locations on the Oregon Coast.

Wild Rose Art

The bank along the Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon is lined with gorgeous wild roses in the springtime. In the background, there is a combination of pleasure boats and fishing boats and, the beautiful Yaquina Bay Bridge.

Off to the right, are some fishermen headed for the Pacific Ocean to try and catch a halibut. The day is overcast and it is about ready to pour.

I converted the capture to High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) and then applied a special texture called "Image Luminance". It really added a "pop" to the rose bushes.

What is so special is the combination of a nautical scene with a floral scene!

Fishing Fleet Art

The "Little J" is a member of one of the largest fishing fleet in Oregon. She is based in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast.

The morning light is perfect! The Little J is sort of all by herself and, of course cool reflections coming off of her.

In the background is Yaquina Bay and the Bay Bridge. The Coast Guard Station is off to the right, closest to the bridge.

Sternwheeler Art

This is the Newport (Oregon) Belle, a floating Bed and Breakfast moored in South Beach on Yaquina Bay on the Oregon Coast! It is a sternwheeler riverboat specifically designed as a Bed & Breakfast Inn.

It was constructed in 1993 and is Coast Guard Certified although, they do not move the the riverboat from its mooring. It is usually closed during the winter months but, a very cool place to stay during the spring, summer and fall tourist season. Very unique!

Lighthouse Wall Art

Since I live on the Central Oregon Coast, lighthouse art/photography is a passion! I live less than a mile from the Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon.

Battery Point Lighthouse (LINK) The Battery Point Lighthouse is in Crescent City, California. It can only be accessed by foot in low tide. It was one of the first lighthouses on the California coast. It was built in the 1850's. Present day, there are caretakers that live in the lighthouse and conduct tours of the premises almost daily, depending upon the tides. The fourth-order Fresnel lens used in the lighthouse is on display along with historic photos and other lighthouse memorabilia. The structure is hand carved stone and the  brick tower is white square granite. The lighthouse is in the Cape Cod style. The height is 45 feet above sea level.

Trinidad Head Lighthouse (LINK) Trinidad Head Lighthouse is located on the Northern California Coast...of course in the town of Trinidad! The capture was made on a rather foggy day. The original lighthouse was built in 1871 and, consisted of a small two-story light tower, a Victorian style residence, and a barn.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse At Sunset (LINK) The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a major attraction on the Central Oregon Coast! The lighthouse was constructed around 1868 and still uses its original  French-made, Fresnel lens! It has even been in the movies: "The Ring", "Hysterical" and in the television series "Nancy Drew Mysterious"! Recently, it received a paint-job...it looks better than ever! Folks come from all over the country to visit this magnificent lighthouse! There is also a visitor's center that is a must place to check out!

Umpqua River Lighthouse (LINK) The Umpqua River Lighthouse is located in Reedsport on the Southern Oregon Coast. It was originally built in 1855 but because of foundation issues was rebuilt in 1888. The lighthouse is 61 feet high and had a first order Fresnel lens. It was automated in 1966.The Umpqua River Lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It can be seen 21 miles out at sea.

Across From The Coquille River Lighthouse (LINK) A capture of the Coquille River Lighthouse from across the Coquille River in Bandon, Oregon. The lighthouse has been out of use since the late thirties however, it is still maintained and visited by tourist from all over the world. 

Heceta Head Lighthouse (LINK) The lighthouse is located on the Oregon Coast between Yachats and Florence, Oregon. Off to the right, with the red roof is the Lighthouse Keeper's Home, which since has been converted into a Bed and Breakfast. For over 100 years, the Heceta Head Lighthouse has assisted ships and boats of all sizes to navigate the Pacific Ocean's treacherous currents. Heceta Head is named after Don Bruno de Heceta, a Spanish Explorer who in 1775 sailed up the West Coast.

Coquille River Lighthouse And Driftwood (LINK) On this beach, is one the largest collection of driftwood that you will ever run across! Winter is officially over and a whole winter's worth of driftwood has washed up on the beach. Off to the left is the Coquille River (not visible in the image) and, the Coquille River Lighthouse. In the background is the town of Bandon which is on the Southern Oregon Coast. The original name of the Coquille River Lighthouse was the "Bandon Light" and commissioned in 1895. The lighthouse became active in 1896. The light helped boaters avoid dangerous sandbars in the Coquille River and led them safely into the harbor at Bandon. The light contained a fourth-order Fresnel lens. In 1936, a large fire swept through Bandon and destroyed much of the town. Bandon became bankrupt. There was a decline in shipping and, the lighthouse was shut down. It was replaced by an automated light on the south jetty. So basically, the Coquille River Lighthouse has not been an active lighthouse for decades!

Afternoon At The Cape Meares Lighthouse (LINK) Cape Meares Lighthouse is located in Netarts, Oregon. It is located just west of Tillamook on the Oregon Coast and, at the north end of the Three Capes Scenic Area. The lighthouse is located up high were there are super viewpoints where folks can checkout off-shore rocks for native birds and  whale migrations.

Morning At The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse (LINK) This is the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is in Newport, Oregon. It hardly ever gets any TLC because the other lighthouse, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a working lighthouse and is the most popular one on the Oregon Coast. However, the Bay Lighthouse is staffed five hours a day by volunteers and, has tours and has a nice little gift shop. It is well worth visiting for that touch of nostalgia!

Oregon Coast Wall Art

Newport, Oregon on the Central Coast boosts the largest fishing fleet in Oregon.

Easy access, a fairly tame bar to cross to the Pacific Ocean, good fishing and crabbing makes for an excellent port for the fisherman. Yaquina Bay and the Yaquina Bay Bridge are in the background.

You can tell by the static crab rings on the boats that crabbing is at a standstill and many boats are in port.

Yaquina Bay Wall Art!

Yaquina Bay is on the Oregon Coast in Newport,Oregon. The setting in the harbor is just after the sun has set. The orange color is striking!

Going Out To Sea!

Yaquina Bay and Newport on the Oregon Coast is the home of Oregon's largest fishing fleet.

On this particular day, a lone fishing boat has rounded one of the breakwaters and is headed to the bar and, to the open Pacific.

The Newport Coast Guard Station is off to the right. The famous Yaquina Bay Bridge is in the background!

Neon Seascape Art

Yaquina Bay in Newport on the Oregon Coast is home to Oregon's largest fishing fleet. The view is  from South Beach looking toward the bridge and the Historic Bayfront.

This image was converted to a neon presentation giving it a different perspective, an abstract look rather than the normal everyday capture.

It has a "midnight" feel to it...like everything is calm. Take in the reflections in the water. It is very calm and there is very little distortion of the boats in the reflections.

Port Of Newport Dock No 7

You can visit many docksides, here and there but, you will find that the ones in Newport on the Oregon Coast are working docks. This means that the fishing boats are not just for show, they go out to sea and catch fish and crab and bring them back to the dockside canneries.  Lots of hard work!

Usually, during fishing and  crabbing seasons these docks are a beehive of activity. When this scene was captured the bar and seas were rough and everyone was in port. Don't let the blue sky fool you!

It was a peaceful scene...nobody was out fishing however, some were working on their boats to get them prepared for the next good fishing day!

Summer Place

No, this is not a spicy romantic film featuring Troy Donahue in the 1959 film "A Summer Place"!  It's an image of an older, but cool restored fishing boat moored in Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon.

The trim around the boat is either teak or mahogany. The boat has a nostalgic feel about it...it's not just another fishing boat. So, let's go fishin'!

In the background, is Newport's Historic Bayfront and some cool houses on the bluff. Newport is home to the largest fishing fleet in Oregon.

F/V Sylvia

The setting is Yaquina Bay in Newport on the Oregon Coast. I was able to capture the F/V (Fishing Vessel) Sylvia all by herself.

This is sort of an interesting story. In February of 2014, the F/V (Fishing Vessel) Sylvia was at sea and reported taking on water, that her pumps could not stay ahead of the leak and the Coast Guard went to the rescue.

However, the crew of the Sylvia were able to fire up an additional pump which helped the situation immensely. The Coast Guard installed yet another pump, got the water level down and patched the leak. The boat made it back to port safely!
