Reflections

One day the sun was just right to catch the many, and interesting reflections captured in the glass at World Trade Center in Portland, Oregon!

This modern structure reflected an old historic building magnificently with its arched windows. While other figures were bent with the angle of the glass.

This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures, and then incorporating the results into a digital impressionist painting.

The Pagoda and the Koi

I had the opportunity to photograph much of the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon (PDX) on a dark and dreary day before it was opened to the public. Now, most folks will op for a sunshiny day but, when it is nasty out all but the most intrepid are out.

The intrepid were the photographers that were out and about in the gardens. And, most photographers will not step in between your camera and tripod, and the subject, while your are trying to take a photo.

As a result, I was able to get some pretty nice pictures out of the deal. And, from time to time I will post them here.

The below pagoda sits on an outcropping from the Koi pond. I took the photo from a bridge with a water falls in the background all while capturing some of the Koi in the water.

I have posted for sale, photos that I hope you will like. Most were taken from the East Bank.

You can purchase prints (in a variety of form) from my Thom Zehrfeld Artist Website. I have provided links under each photo here so you can chose an appropriate format, for example:

 2. Framed Prints
 3. Art Prints
 4. Acrylic Prints
 5. Metal Prints
 6. Greeting Cards
 7. i Phone Cases
 8. Galaxy Cases
 9. Throw Pillows
10. Duvet Covers
11. Tote Bags

As you can see there is a lot of variety in which to choose from and, for every budget level

Let's get started:

The Hawthorne Bridge is one of Portland's oldest bridges...in a city known as "Bridge City"! It is also one of Portland's most popular bridges.

Hundreds of bicyclist cross the bridge daily to and, from their workplaces downtown. With all the bicycles, Portland is known as an environmentalist city and, they are proud of it!

The Union Station in Portland is an Oregon Landmark!  Construction of the station began in 1890 at a cost of  $300,000.

It officially opened on February 14, 1896. One of the highlights of the station is the 150 ft. tall Romanesque Revival clock tower.

Another name for the Hawthorne may be "Bicycle Bridge" because hundreds and hundreds bike over it daily. It is a bascule bridge (drawbridge).

Captured from underneath the Morrison Street Bridge. Light is reflecting off of the support structure of the bridge giving it a golden hue.

Looking at Downtown Portland an East Bank dock! It is still "Blue Hour"! The Willamette River is calm and serene and, lights are reflecting off the water with no distortion.

This is the walkway to the Morrison Street Bridge! The capture is from the approach to the bridge from the Eastbank Esplanade and is looking west toward downtown.

The original bridge was built in 1887 and was a wooden truss swing span bridge. It was the first Willamette River bridge in Portland. And, had the distinction of the longest bridge west of the Mississippi River. The Morrison Street Bridge was rebuilt in the 1950's.

The Japanese Gardens, in Portland are five and half acres in size and, consists of 5 sub-gardens. One realizes a sense of peace, harmony, and tranquility when visiting theses beautiful gardens!

This is the Pagoda at the Japanese Gardens. One of the most authentic and largest Japanese gardens outside of Japan! The Pagoda is not far from the entrance to the Gardens.

It actually covers up an ugly fire hydrant since the City of Portland insists that they have them in case of an emergency...which makes a lot of sense in case of a fire. The cover up is an excellent idea since a hydrant just sitting out in those beautiful gardens would be a distraction.

The Morrison Street Bridge! It is one of many bridges in Portland also known as Bridge City because of the many bridges that cross the Willamette River.

What is unique about this capture are the reflections off of the Morrison. Usually the water is not this still resulting in very little distortion of the colorful lights coming from the bridge. The Morrison is a basule bridge (drawbridge).

The Japanese Maple is one of the most beautiful trees in the world. It was captured late Fall in the Japanese Gardens! A magnificent place to visit should you ever decide to come to Portland or, even if you are from Portland.

Things To Do In Portland

If you ever visit Portland or, even if you live in Portland, one of the cool places to visit is the Sellwood Neighborhood.

It's located in the far reaches of the southeast part of the city and, very easy to get to. Besides all the cool older homes that have been renovated in Sellwood area, there is Antique Row, which stretches along 13th Avenue.

It's not all antiques though, there are chic restaurants, cool gift shops, bakeries and so on. What you do is stroll down thirteenth, take everything in, and then just maybe head down to the Sellwood Riverfront Park which is right on the Willamette River. It's just a few blocks away.

And/or, then head on over to Oaks Amusement Park, which is right next door.

Parallel to the amusement park is Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge which you can spend hours hiking around while taking in the wild life.

All are super fun places to take the family!

I posted a smattering of photos here taken along Thirteenth Avenue. It's not a photo tour...I just walk down the street and take photos...that's all! (Ooh, when you come to the "Sacred Root" sign photo that is a real live crow)

There will be more photos to come in future posts. Please enjoy!

Sellwood \ Land Of Antiques

Sellwood, now called the Sellwood-Moreland Area is one of many cool neighborhoods in Portland.
I would consider Aurora, Oregon and the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood as the major antique sources in my area. I may get some flak over that but as far as I know, these two are the largest and among the finest.

I lived in Westmoreland as a teenager, which is now the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood for 5 years prior to going into the service and, then for about three years afterwords. At one time, Sellwood was known as a rough area.

This has changed over the years, the Sellwood-Moreland Area has undergone a major transformation. Young folks have moved into the area and have fixed up most of the dilapidated homes. And, one by one, cool businesses have infiltrated 13th avenue (the main drag) from start to finish.

This is the first of a series of photographs taken in the area. So, please stay tuned for more. Enjoy!

Downtown Portland OR Three

More pics of Downtown Portland, Oregon! First photo is of a giant chess set in Director's Park. This is a real game that is going on.

The second is the Multnomah County Library which is huge and is an Oregon Landmark. All the rest of the photos are of the City United-Country United Mural in downtown. I had to shoot it in three sections to get it all.

The Mural is located in a neglected plaza on SW 11th and about Morrison...sort of out of the realm of things. But, it's interesting!

Downtown Portland OR Two

This post features a few photos of Pioneer Place in Downtown Portland, Oregon. It is an upscale shopping mall that is, for the most part, underground. Huge tunnels going in different directions that lead to food courts, shopping and cinemas.

I don't know why they think any of it should have been built underground. It should be all open air! It never rains in Oregon.

The last photo here is of the "Bridge City Cafe". Really, only the natives know that Portland's nickname is "Bridge City" because of the many bridges in the area.

Downtown Portland OR

Tripping to Downtown Portland, Oregon is fun! You should try it.

My wife and I live in Oregon City which is a bit south of Portland. Instead of taking our car downtown we chose to ride the bus. It cost a whole dollar for a senior round trip if you stay within so many hours.

The thing about taking the bus is you don't have the parking hassle nor, the driving hassle. But, there are lots of folks that don't like buses...that's OK! To each their own.

There is lots to see and do. The first pic here is the Max Train headed toward Gresham. Off to the left is the "Pioneer Courthouse" and off the the right is "The Nines Hotel" and "Macys" which are in the same building...the old Meier and Frank Department Store...an Oregon Landmark.

Neither my wife or I have been shopping in the downtown Macy's for awhile. What a treat...they have turned into a fun and first-class shopping facility. A must place to go. And, the customer service was exceptional and friendly.

The second photo here is of "Pioneer Square" which has numerous free musical events and many other super activities. It is about as empty of people as it gets in this photo.

The third and fifth photos are of the famous Pioneer Courthouse. Finally, the fourth photo is of the clock tower on top of the old "Oregon Journal Newspaper" building...which probably only the older folks of my generation know about. At night it is a phenomenal site all lite up.

Hawthorne | Portland Oregon 4

All week I have been featuring the Hawthorne District in Southeast Portland on my blog. I would be amiss if I didn't mention the "Pastaworks".

A first-class and unique establishment for meeting your gourmet needs. There are three stores in Portland.

They boast having the largest selection of Italian wine in the country. But, they have an excellent selection of cheeses, veggies not to mention freshly made pasta. Their gourmet selection of meats is unparalleled.

My wife and I usually op for their freshly made pasta anytime that we are near the store. I couldn't help myself but to photograph the veggies and posturerised them.
