Downtown Portland OR Three

More pics of Downtown Portland, Oregon! First photo is of a giant chess set in Director's Park. This is a real game that is going on.

The second is the Multnomah County Library which is huge and is an Oregon Landmark. All the rest of the photos are of the City United-Country United Mural in downtown. I had to shoot it in three sections to get it all.

The Mural is located in a neglected plaza on SW 11th and about Morrison...sort of out of the realm of things. But, it's interesting!

Downtown Portland OR Two

This post features a few photos of Pioneer Place in Downtown Portland, Oregon. It is an upscale shopping mall that is, for the most part, underground. Huge tunnels going in different directions that lead to food courts, shopping and cinemas.

I don't know why they think any of it should have been built underground. It should be all open air! It never rains in Oregon.

The last photo here is of the "Bridge City Cafe". Really, only the natives know that Portland's nickname is "Bridge City" because of the many bridges in the area.

Downtown Portland OR

Tripping to Downtown Portland, Oregon is fun! You should try it.

My wife and I live in Oregon City which is a bit south of Portland. Instead of taking our car downtown we chose to ride the bus. It cost a whole dollar for a senior round trip if you stay within so many hours.

The thing about taking the bus is you don't have the parking hassle nor, the driving hassle. But, there are lots of folks that don't like buses...that's OK! To each their own.

There is lots to see and do. The first pic here is the Max Train headed toward Gresham. Off to the left is the "Pioneer Courthouse" and off the the right is "The Nines Hotel" and "Macys" which are in the same building...the old Meier and Frank Department Store...an Oregon Landmark.

Neither my wife or I have been shopping in the downtown Macy's for awhile. What a treat...they have turned into a fun and first-class shopping facility. A must place to go. And, the customer service was exceptional and friendly.

The second photo here is of "Pioneer Square" which has numerous free musical events and many other super activities. It is about as empty of people as it gets in this photo.

The third and fifth photos are of the famous Pioneer Courthouse. Finally, the fourth photo is of the clock tower on top of the old "Oregon Journal Newspaper" building...which probably only the older folks of my generation know about. At night it is a phenomenal site all lite up.

Temple In HDR Two

Couple a days ago I shot a religious temple in Portland, Oregon. This is the second post. The first post is Temple In HDR One (Link)

All the photos were shot with a point and shoot. Converted in Camera RAW and processed into High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) using Photomatix software.

Temple In HDR

Hey, a few photos in HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography! This post features a unique and religious temple in Portland, Oregon that I ran across on a trip to a meat market. This temple is colorful, it is beautiful and it is well maintained.

When I go anywhere I usually have a camera with me. However, I had only my Canon Elph 300 HS versus my Pentax DSLR.

I wasn't able to take the proverbial bracketed shots with the Canon like I am with the Pentax. Nor, can I shoot in RAW like I can with the Pentax.

But, that doesn't stop me from converting the single shots that I take and processing them into HDR. See my Hub Post (link) about converting your Point and Shoot JPEG shots into HDR Images.

Learn HDR Photography | Photomatix Review

Updated 8/16/16

1934 Ford Coupe (LINK)

With the advent of the modern digital camera it is fairly easy to take High Dynamic Range photos (HDR). See Phase One and Phase Two of “Learn HDR Photography.

Even on most of the latest point and shoot cameras you can adjust the Exposure Value manually to cover the necessary exposure range, as long as you use a tripod, and that the total exposure range is at least a total of four, plus and minus.

    3 exposure settings
EV 0 for the first shot
EV -2 for the second shot
EV +2 for the third shot

As shown the best order of bracketing is Meter (0) /Under/Over.

The majority of P&S cameras shoot in JPEG. For HDR that's great! But, if you are going to shoot HDR photography with a P&S make sure you shut off all the automatic stuff. No automatic flash and so on.

Concentrate on getting the different exposures right. Practice without the tripod.  Sit in chair and set the EV at zero and see what the standard shot is going to look like, and then move the EV up and down and you can see the difference in exposure before you take the actual shots.

On most modern DSLRs you have what is called Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB) built in.

Instead of having to manually change the Exposure Value for each of these three shots the camera does it for you. The camera is usually set on AV or aperture priority and you set the f/stop.

Ninety five percent of HDR shots I take are with a wide angle lens when using my Pentax DSLR. In daylight almost everything is shot at f16 or f22 for a consistent depth of field and, of course aperture priority setting.

I shoot in RAW, although JPEG works just as well in HDR photography. I set the ISO to 100.

I have used f22 inside a building and it has worked great. Night time may be a whole different ballgame and I will report later on that.

For my HDR processing I use Photomatix. It's reasonably priced and it is the best HDR software I know about. They have an excellent built in tutorial.

The software is like magic...it does all the work for you...alignment of the various exposures, de-ghosting, removal of chromatic aberrations and other things that can go wrong in HDR. And, “poof”out comes this magical photo.

The best part is: You don't like your HDR photo, there are super controls within Photomatix that you can play with to finite your masterpiece.

I have Elements 13 as of 2015. If I want to do further minor tweaking I use that. The combination of Photomatix and Elements works great! As of 2013, I also have added Lightroom 5. It is excellent in post production, adding contrast, clarity, alignment and so forth.

Whether you have an inexpensive P&S or an expensive DSLR there is no excuse but to try your hand at HDR Photograph. It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
