Last Straw

This cool fishing vessel (F/V Last Straw) is moored at Dock 5 in Newport on the Oregon Coast. What was interesting, other than the boat, was the light.

Conditions were just right for a remarkable capture! Check out the cloud formation. There is just enough sun to accent the clouds.

Newport has the largest fishing fleet on the Oregon, if not the entire West Coast. The fishing and crab boats enjoy a quick trip to the Pacific with a (usually) tame Bar to cross!

This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color.

Yaquina Bay Bridge Reflections

The Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport on the Oregon Coast is one of the most recognizable bridges in Oregon. It was constructed in 1936 to span Yaquina Bay from Newport, to what now is called South Beach.

Before, the only way to cross the Bay was by Ferry. And, in those days crossing could be a little treacherous.

This particular capture was made from South Beach, looking west. In the foreground, are wild rose bushes and, you can spot the rose hips this time of year.

The boats pictured are mainly pleasure boats and sailboats. Off to the left, is the world headquarters for Rogue Brewing Co.!

This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color. Texture was added for a unique final image!

Garibaldi

Garibaldi is on the Oregon Coast and, is a small fishing village nestled against a hillside at the northern end of Tillamook Bay.

And, yes this coastal town is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi who unified Italy in 1870. The person that named the town was impressed with Mr. Garibaldi.

This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures, and then incorporating the results into a digital painting.

Newport has the largest fishing fleet in Oregon if not the West Coast!

In the background, is the bay front with the lower turquoise building being an Inn.

American Pride

The American Pride is a paddlewheeler and was originally built to cruise the Mississippi and was named the Queen Of The Mississippi. At that time, it cruised and explored St.Louis, Memphis and Louisville.

In 2016, it was renamed and now cruises the Columbia and Snake Rivers focusing on Pacific Northwest scenery. The American Pride was in Astoria, Oregon when this capture was made.

Astoria is an excellent place to catch a monumental amount of Pacific Northwest history.

Benton County Courthouse

The Benton County Courthouse is located in Corvallis, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest. It was constructed in 1888.

It is the oldest county courthouse in Oregon still being used for its original function. The structure houses a gigantic clock that, until 1953 had to be wound by hand by climbing into the tower twice a week.

Now a small electric motor does the job!  The Courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The image has been converted to a digital painting that I hope you enjoy. If you would like to explore this image, or others, please see links below!

No. 25 Steam Locomotive

Old Number 25 is a working, nostalgic steam locomotive. It pulls excursion cars on the Oregon Coast near Tillamook, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest.

There are different scenic trips that you can take. For example, one trip takes you along Tillamook Bay and gives passengers a view of the Bay and also of the Pacific Ocean.

Another trip, especially during the fall takes you into the Nehalem River Canyon. Both are cool trips! Note the American Flag and the State of Oregon Flag!

Jerry's Rogue River Tours

The Rogue River in Gold Beach on the Southern Oregon Coast and, Pacific Northwest is one of the most famous rivers in Oregon. A lot of it has to do with rafting and fishing but, there is also Jerry's Rogue River Jet Boat Tours.

There is the 64 mile mail boat route, yes, they deliver real mail! And, then for real boys and girls there is the 104 mile wilderness whitewater excursion.

Proud to say, that I have been on the 64 mile one. It is a blast! You head upstream to a place called Agness, where they deliver the mail to.

You have lunch there and head back downstream. The jet boat travels at a high rate of speed, to say the least.

However, the pilot stops regularly to point places of interest, wildlife and historical facts and cools the speed thing. It is a must do adventure!

Historic Patterson Bridge - Gold Beach

The Historic Patterson Bridge is located in Gold Beach on the Southern Oregon Coast, and the Pacific Northwest. It is named after Isaac (Ike) Patterson, the 18th Governor of Oregon from 1927 to 1929.

He died from Pneumonia, while in office in December of 1929. The Patterson Bridge was completed in 1932. It was constructed in the Art Deco Motif. This is obvious in the details of the bridge.

The sun is starting to set in the Pacific and is casting a golden hue on the bridge. The moon is present in the capture. The seagulls (Western Gulls) are gathered on the grass waiting for handouts.

The bridge is located on the famous Rogue River. The Patterson Bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 5, 2005.

The image was converted to High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) through special software.

The image has been converted to a digital painting that I hope you enjoy. If you would like to explore this image, or others, please see links below!

Bicycle Garden Art

This "Bicycle" sits in a garden setting in Cottage Grove, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest and just sitting there in a garden has turned this bike, complete with basket, into a work of art.

For me, it is a revisited setting. The bike was enshrined there some three years ago when I was in Cottage Grove. No new moss was noticed however, the green vegetation is starting to become more entwined with the bicycle.

It is early in the morning and the sun is starting to shine through. It was the start of a beautiful day!

Nye Beach

The Nye Beach District in Newport, Oregon is about one of the nicest beach communities going. It's small and it consists of tremendous people, restaurants and shops...and, a beach that won't wait!

Basically, it's the tourist center of Newport. However, the rain and poor weather keeps the population well below the million mark which, if that happened, would bring chaos to this great community...the ruination of a perfect beach and place. So keep up the poor weather.

The photos here are random and are not really showing "the meat" of the community.  I'm just walking around taking pictures.

Yaquina Bay Bridge

The Yaquina Bay Bridge on Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast, in Newport is some seventy seven years old. It is one of the most recognizable bridges in Oregon and certainly one of the most photographed.

I shot it from the Historic Bayfront District rather than getting up close and personal. I'll do that in the future..maybe at night.

All photos were taken early in the morning. One shot here is without the bridge in the background.  I photographed that looking into the sun just before it rose.

Fishing Boats

When you visit the Oregon Coast and Newport a must thing to do is to check out the fishing boats in Yaquina Bay.

It is the largest fishing fleet in Oregon and consists of hundreds upon hundreds of boats of all sizes.

The photos here were taken within minutes of each other but they way they turned out is like night and day.

The first photo was shot directly into the sun. The second pic is perpendicular to the sun. And the third and fourth were taken with the sun to my back.

Wall Murals

Visiting the Newport, Oregon Historic Bayfront is a real treat. It has a lot of history dating back to the 1800's and, is home to Oregon's largest fishing fleet.

Although, the fishing industry dominates much of the Bayfront, there are all kinds of neat shops, restaurants and tourist attractions to enjoy.

In this segment, however, I will be featuring photos of some of the cool and, numerous wall murals that are scattered throughout the Bayfront on the sides of buildings.

As far as I know, many of the murals displayed here are by artist Rick Chambers of Bend, Oregon. His murals and others are just phenomenal to say the least.
