Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge

Inside the city limits of Portland, Oregon lies Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge.  Yes, a real live wildlife refuge complete with blue herons, bald eagles and a variety of other birds including hawks and woodpeckers.

At the right time of the day, a birder's paradise. Not many bigtime cities anywhere can claim this.
Oaks Bottom is really a backwater for the Willamette River.  And, during the winter looks more like a lake.

At one time, long time ago, I lived close to Oaks Bottom and was able to catch a few catfish.  I don't know if you can do that anymore.

As I looked back at the photos I took, one shot in particular, with downtown Portland in the background reminded me of Central Park.

I further processed some of the photos here through High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR) software.  The one shot makes the Portland skyscapers look animated. That's the effect I wanted.

My wife, the puppie and I are walkers.  There are several routes to go.

Close to the river is a major paved biking and walking path.  Closer to the bluff that overlooks the Refuge is a unpaved trail that we favor.

You would think that you are in the middle of a forest.  I have never seen a whole bunch of folks on it.  Most favor the paved stuff.

If you are into nature...you are aren't you?...you will just love this place, and will thank your stars that there are still places like this on earth to enjoy.
