Whalen Island Oregon

Whalen Island, incorporated with the Clay Myer State Natural Area, on the Oregon Coast is easy to miss. It's way off the beaten path and, easy to drive by without noticing it.

It is in Tillamook County, north of Pacific City and just off of Sandlake Road. It's not even close to 101.

It is Oregon's only camping island.  And, it's quiet and peaceful because not many folks know about it. On the day I was there I saw only two campsites that were occupied.

The campground, itself is eight acres with thirty campsites. The whole site is about 200 acres along with the Myers Natural Area.

The water around the island is called "Sandlake" and is only, in general about two feet deep at high tide...but, some neat kayaking...probably best to go with someone that knows the water, though.

If you are into hiking there is a 2 1/2 mile loop trail. It was interesting that there was a warning about bear sightings and, what to do if you encounter one. My wife and I had taken a hike earlier or, we would have walked the entire loop.

To get to it, you cross a bridge into this cool setting.

Hiking In Oregon - Central Oregon Coast

There are a lot of great hikes in Oregon...especially on the Oregon Coast. An intriguing one is Trail 804 in Yachats, Oregon starting at the Smelt Sands Recreation Site.

It is short, three quarters of a mile, paralleling the ocean. However, it is a unforgettable jaunt which is rich in vegetation and lava outcropping.

When going from south to north, you eventually come to a beach. You can walk all the way from Yachats to Waldport which is a seven mile hike.

Seal Rock Oregon

Seal Rock Beach is located about ten miles south of Newport, Oregon. It's a beautiful place! And, that's not even giving it justice...it's like a very special gift from above and to be cherished.

Not really a place for the sunbathers. It's more of a "get in touch with nature and yourself type of place"!

I was fortunate to get down to the beach in a minus tide, early in the morning on a beautiful day. Seal Rock has a ton of tide pools filled with Starfish, Sea Anemones, Barnacles, Mussels and so on.

The first photo here depicts some huge and black shiny seaweed that has washed into this small cove. I set my tripod low to the ground and, shot fast, because the water was coming at me.
